Beware! Fake Funeral Livestream Scam

Cybercriminals are always finding new ways to exploit vulnerable situations, and sadly, the loss of a loved one is no exception. In this week’s alarming scam, hackers are targeting grieving families and their networks by creating fake funeral livestreams to steal personal and financial information.

How the Scam Works
Cybercriminals scour social media platforms for announcements about recently deceased individuals. They then steal photos and personal details of the deceased, using this information to create convincing comments on posts. These comments often suggest that the funeral service is being live-streamed, and they include a link that promises to direct users to the service.

However, once you click on this link, you’re redirected to a fraudulent website controlled by the criminals. This site will ask for your credit card details under the pretense of needing payment to access the stream. Unfortunately, if you input any personal information, it will go straight into the hands of the scammers. Not only will you be unable to watch the funeral, but your credit card could also be fraudulently charged.

Protect Yourself from Fake Funeral Scams
Here are some simple yet effective tips to protect yourself from falling victim to such scams:

  • Verify Donation Requests: Before donating to any online fund related to funeral services or memorials, ensure that the fund has been set up by an official and verifiable source.
  • Limit Personal Information on Social Media: If you’re sharing details about a loved one who has passed away, consider setting your social media profiles to private. This can make it harder for cybercriminals to gather personal details and photos.
  • Be Wary of Links and Financial Requests: Always exercise caution before entering your financial information online. Ensure the website you’re visiting is secure and legitimate by looking for HTTPS in the URL and confirming the authenticity of the request.

Remember…
Cybercriminals prey on emotions and grief, but with awareness and caution, you can protect yourself and others from their malicious schemes. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and always think twice before clicking any unfamiliar links.
