Citynet Newsletter: February 2002
Greetings!
At Citynet, our No. 1 priority is providing you with quality service. That commitment is shown this month in a host of new features now available to Citynet customers. For starters, you can now access the Internet and your email accounts from more locations. That's especially good news for frequent travelers, who can now check their Citynet email from any Internet-enabled computer, anywhere in the world. Plus, we're providing powerful new tools to combat spam, the unsolicited email that can clog up your Inbox.
And for business customers, Citynet is offering six months of free high-speed Internet access when you sign up for any dedicated access account.
As you can see, there are lots of good things happening here at Citynet. Read on for all the details!
New Anti-Spam Tools On the Job
Citynet has added new anti-spam filters that dramatically reduce the amount of unsolicited email you receive. System-wide, we're now intercepting more than 1 million pieces of spam every week! We've added this service in response to overwhelming demand from customers who are tired of Inbox clutter, plus the offensive nature of some of these messages.
For years, Citynet has not allowed its mail servers to be used to relay spam messages (that is, spam arriving from elsewhere and simply passing through our system to other locations). These relays are one of the principal ways that spammers hide their true location. Unfortunately, some other companies do not have such a policy, don't care, or simply lack the technology to stop the relays. Citynet's new anti-spam software identifies the prime offenders, and blocks email coming from them.
No system can completely eliminate spam -- most of the spammers are now based overseas, and they're constantly coming up with new attack strategies. But Citynet customers are already seeing a dramatic decrease in the amount of these unwanted messages.
Opt-Outs Available
Despite the benefits, some Citynet customers may want to opt out of the anti-spam program. This most frequently occurs when a friend or business colleague is using one of the spam-relaying companies for their regular email. If you are suddenly experiencing difficulty receiving emails from such persons, it may be that their messages are being caught by the spam filters.
If so, you can easily opt-out of the spam filtering by going to your Account Manager at
http://www.citynet.net/accountmanagerlogin.cfm and removing the filters from any of your email accounts. Or, you can call our 24/7 Customer Service Department at 1-800-881-CNET.
(You might also want to call your friend and tell him or her to find a more responsible email provider!)
Citynet Webmail Now Available
Traveling out of state and want to check your Citynet email? Now you can, thanks to Version 1 of Citynet's new Webmail service. Using any Internet-enabled computer -- anywhere in the world -- simply go to
http://citymail.citynet.net (No "www"). Sign in with your email address and account password, and you can check new messages, send email, and delete unwanted or excessively large emails from the server.
This system is not designed as a regular email client and is not intended for everyday use. But it's a boon for frequent travelers, and can also help if your regular email "times out" on a particularly large message. Go to Citynet Webmail to delete the offending message, and your regular email will be right back in business! Future versions of Webmail will add even more functionality, so stay tuned.

Dial-Up Access Expanded
Citynet has expanded its dial-up capabilities in partnership with another West Virginia company, Fibernet. New local Fibernet numbers in these areas can now be used in most regions to access Citynet.
