Citynet Newsletter: April 2002

Greetings!

This month's Citynet newsletter has plenty for tech-types, as our ongoing process of network upgrades provides new security and amazing new backup features. Citynet's award-winning design and development team has -- what else? -- won another major award. Finally, we've got tips on using Citynet's new webmail service, which is available free as part of your basic Citynet service. Find out more:

Site Wins Edward R. Murrow Award

For more than three decades, the name of pioneering CBS News Correspondent Edward R. Murrow was synonymous with excellence, achievement and integrity. That's why the national Radio and Television News Directors Association honored the Citynet-designed MetroNews web site in March as a winner of the Edward R. Murrow award for electronic journalism.

MetroNews is West Virginia's statewide radio network, with affiliates throughout the state. It wanted a web site with the very latest in web technology -- automated text updates, streaming media, and special membership areas for special features. Citynet's design and development team delivered it all at the site
http://www.wvmetronews.com/.

We can do the same for your business or organization. Call Citynet today at 1-800-903-8906 and make your own web site an award-winner, too.

More Zeroes, Please

Longtime Citynet customers will remember (or maybe prefer to forget!) when hard drives on their personal computers were measured in the 10's and 20's -- megabytes, that is. A "meg" is 1 million bytes, or pieces of information. Today it isn't uncommon for the typical PC or Mac to come with drives capable of storing 1,000 times as much data, measured in gigabytes (billions of bytes).

Citynet took the next great leap forward this month with our new network-wide backup system -- a single machine capable of storing 2.4 terabytes. That's 2.4 trillion bytes, or 2,400,000,000,000 pieces of data. The new "Quantum Robotic Tape Library Backup System" triples the speed of our backups, on every server on the state's biggest Internet network. It gives us the ability to restore any file on our system to a given day. Plus, it's fun to watch -- sort of like an enormous CD jukebox, only the robotic arm automatically brings up the right library tape for each server backup on the system.

What's it mean to you? More reliability, and more protection for your critical web site and network information. In short, better and even more reliable service for all Citynet customers.

Webmail -- Worth Remembering

Got too many computer passwords? These days, everybody does. But here's one that's worth a Post-It note on your monitor: your Citynet email account password. The reason is that we keep adding online services that help you use your Citynet account more easily, efficiently and economically.

The latest is Citynet Webmail. With it, you can check your email from any web-connected computer, anywhere in the world. You also can use it to manage your mail queue, especially if an overly large incoming file is causing your email client to stall or time out. Just use your Citynet email address and password to log on at http://citymail.citynet.net/. You can read, send, and manage your emails -- from anywhere! We've also got trouble-shooting directions online at http://citynet.net/emailset.cfm#trouble.

Forgotten your password? Just call our 24/7 Customer Service Center at 1-800-881-2638 (1-800-881-CNET) and one of our representatives will be glad to help.

Location, Location, Location

For years, "Location, Location, Location" has been a mantra for retail and commercial businesses: Being in the right place means bringing in the business. Citynet offers a complete range of "co-location" services that can put your company's crucial data and business applications in the best possible place.

At Citynet's new Bridgeport headquarters, we offer air-conditioned, fully secure space for customers' servers on a Gigabit Ethernet Fiber backbone to the Internet, with redundant T3 connections via Qwest. Plus, Citynet provides round-the-clock network maintenance to make sure your applications and data are always available.

Who uses co-location services? Customers who need to put their data in a place of high availability/connectivity to the Internet. Customers whose online database needs to be available to many different clients 24/7. Customers running custom web-based applications, or file servers that need lots of bandwidth during peak periods.

Citynet takes the hassle and expense out of running bandwidth-intensive businesses, web sites and applications. Call Citynet's Commercial Sales Department today at 1-800-903-8906 to find out more.

Staying in Touch

Here's a reminder: Use Citynet's exclusive online Account Manager to stay in touch with important information regarding your account. Even if you're using credit-card or automatic bank withdrawal for payments, you still need to specify a single, specific billing email address. We use it to send monthly summaries of your account activity and other important notices regarding your Citynet service.

This is especially important if -- like most Citynet customers -- you use multiple email addresses for family members or business purposes. Log on to Account Manager from the Citynet home page, http://www.citynet.net/, and you can specify your billing email and administer all other aspects of your service as well.
